Shake it!

Melinda Mills had nearly 100 children dancing and singing at Governor’s Square Branch Library’s Catch the Reading Bug celebration yesterday, July 15. The program, Learning Through Song, included classic songs like “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me” “There Ain’t No Bugs on Me” and “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and songs to get the kids up on their feet, like “YMCA.” Kids from littlest (one year old) to biggest (almost 11) were seen to have a great time singing at the top of their lungs, listening to Ms Mills’ dynamic, entertaining reading, and shaking it in the Governor’s Square Branch Library meeting room.

At the close of the program, Ms Mills asked the children if they enjoyed the books they read today. When the kids shouted a resounding YES! Ms Mills reminded them that they were all available at– you guessed it! — The Library!

Winn Dixie and Keebler provided an extremely generous donation of — you guessed it! Bug Bites graham crackers and Grasshopper cookies, along with orange punch bug juice and grape soda bug juice. Applebees provided a very large contribution of cups and napkins.

Every child went home with a personally inscribed certificate congratulating them for completing the program, packed into a goody bag stuffed with donations from other generous sponsors– Kids Only magazine, Chick-Fil-A, and Dollar General.

I hope the children left with at least one bug on them, anyway– the Reading Bug!
